Almost every employee at JSC couldn't stop talking about the X-38. The Shuttle and Space Station did not seem to excite them as much as their pet project, the X-38. I was told "Be sure to visit building 220" at least a dozen times. It was a pretty slick vehicle. Small, simple, and after it enters the atmosphere, will deploy a huge parasail, making it possible to land almost anywhere on the planet. It doesn't need a runway, and it can also float in water if absolutely necessary.
